Founded in 2016, our purpose is to advocate for Jewish pluralism, and foster community amongst anti-Zionist Jews in Aotearoa. We are proud to support Palestinians in pursuit of justice, liberation, human rights, and self-determination. Jewish freedom is incomplete without the freedom of the Palestinian people. Dayenu seeks a just and lasting peace in historic Palestine based on principles of law, equality and human rights for all. We firmly support the right of return of Palestinians to their homes and lands.
While Dayenu was born out of the pro-Palestine movement, we are committed to anti-racism work more widely. We are steadfast in publicly combatting racism in all its forms, including antisemitism, in Aotearoa. We support universal freedoms, human rights, and social justice. Dayenu acknowledges that most Jews in Aotearoa are tangata Tiriti. We stand in solidarity with tangata whenua in their struggle for mana motuhake.
What is anti-Zionism?
Dayenu has lovingly borrowed the definition of anti-Zionism from our US counterparts: Jewish Voice for Peace. Being an anti-Zionist means opposing the political ideology of Zionism, which resulted in the expulsion of 750,000 Indigenous Palestinians from their land and homes. It means standing against the creation of a Jewish nation-state with exclusive rights for Jews over others. Anti-Zionism supports liberation and justice for the Palestinian people, including their right to return to their homes and land. Anti-Zionists believe in a future where all people on the land live in freedom, safety and equality.
Zionism suggests Jews require a supremacist nation state to secure Jewish safety. We believe Jews belong and should be safe everywhere in the world. Real safety does not grow from guns, checkpoints, walls, and a police state. True safety is built through forging real solidarity with those fighting for a more just world.
